[In slightly rusty conversational Klingon:]

nuqneH, General Chang! It looks like we've been paired up. I'm looking forward to this!

[Chuck sat in the library about ten minutes later, keeping an eye out for his inmate. Chang couldn't be too hard to spot - how many Klingons were there on the Barge, anyway?]

[Only the one and a half. Chang was ready with a couple of books, having tried to teach Aleera.] Chuck.

[Chuck, of course, snaps to.] "Yes! Sir! General. Hi."

[Because he's used to irate generals.]

[Long stare. He's not entirely sure if he's put off by the sudden 'Yes! Sir!' or the 'Hi'. On the one hand, he shouldn't be 'sir'ing him at all. Chuck's supposed to take charge, not him. And while he doesn't object to the 'General' going 'hi' after that sends mixed messages.] At ease.

"O-kay," [Chuck says, and stuffs his hands into his pockets. Idiot!!! He's not too good at first impressions anyway.] "So I guess it's language lesson time?"

[Well 'O-kay' was a new one on him as a response. Clearly the boy was used to playacting as part of a military. This was going to be tedious. His tone is now the kind of wariness you come across when someone is afraid the person they're talking to might just spontaneously burst into song in, well, a library.] Yes.

[Chuck immediately settles into Serious Mode. Look at how serious he is being right now. He sits down and looks attentive.]

[He puts the books on the table on the side.] How would you like to begin?

[He shrugs.] The basics? Useful phrases? Like I said, I'm a little out of practice. [Although he could parse Bryce's weird construction of "bulletproof vest" under duress...still, baby steps.]

Hmm. [Chang settles beside him.] First. We do not habitually use 'hello' as a greeting. Not if we know who that person is or we have something to say to them. Passing a Klingon on the street, it is ok. In letters, it is also acceptable. Otherwise, it is used to be… cocky? Overconfident and uncaring. Challenging.

Right...got it. [Chuck writes it down, underlines "overconfident". Because he certainly does not want to seem that way to a Klingon! That's a good way to get a mek'leth through your abdomen.] So what do you say instead?

We do not. At most we tell them we know who they are. Then we tell them why we wish to speak to them.

Oh. That makes sense. [He knew that Klingons didn't go for pleasantries, but even greetings were taboo. Awesome.]

[Not taboo, merely indicative of jackassery.] More efficient.

Right. [Efficient! Efficiency is good. Not for the first time, Chuck thinks Casey would fit in well with Klingons, what with his habit of using a grunt as a greeting.]

Manners, as humans know it, are generally used to imply that the other is delicate, thus, it becomes insulting. [Casey would probably have more in common with these guys (http://www.startrekfreedom.com/wiki/index.php/Brikar), Klingons generally like to party more.]

Oh. [Yeah, that actually makes a lot of sense.] I can see why it would be in Klingon culture. [Dunno, Casey is a pretty awesome DJ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ov26gEtDVNc).]

[Chang nods and pulls out a Klingon translation of Merchant of Venice.] Have you seen this?

No, can't say I have...[Man, he hasn't used Klingon script since he and Bryce left notes for each other back at Stanford. He's beginning to worry about this if all it does is remind him of the guy who'd been his best friend and worst enemy.]

[Chang nods non-committally and pulls out another book.] This is the English translation. We will go through it together, hmm?

[Chuck accepts the book.] Okay. Sounds good.

[Want to assume the actual reading?

[Yes please. And then we can finally have a new thread! Sorry I've been so derpy on this one.]
